'Growing together: research-practice partnership for woodland restoration' event

On 9 June CSFL 2026, in collaboration with Forest Research, Woodland Trust, and Future Woodlands Scotland hosted a workshop titled ‘Growing together: research-practice partnership for woodland restoration.’

Our recent work highlights the diverse knowledge needs of practitioners in Scotland and the importance of deeper research–practice collaboration (Daniels‑Creasey et al., 2025).

Addressing these needs requires opportunities to build relationships, share knowledge, and co‑design and co‑produce research. The aim of this all day event was to bring together woodland restoration practitioners and researchers with the aim to strengthen collaboration and knowledge exchange.

During the morning, participants had the opportunity to attend short talks from framing practitioner knowledge needs by the organisers and Forest Research expertise in woodland restoration.

The afternoon focussed on action‑learning sessions with practitioner facilitated small‑group discussions to explore recent and planned research and develop partnership opportunities, such as deer management; invasive non‑native species; conservation grazing; Caledonian pinewoods; establishing montane woodlands; natural regeneration and colonisation.
