Healthy forests and landscapes underpin the well-being of our society physically, financially, and culturally. We accelerate interdisciplinary research, partnerships, teaching, and innovation in sustainable forests and landscapes by building on our breadth of academic expertise and expanding capability where we can. Research themes Forested landscapes sustain biodiversity, regulate climate and water, and support the livelihoods and cultures of billions. Yet they are experiencing growing pressure from climate change, intensified competition from different land uses, and shifting markets and technologies. Managing forests and their surrounding landscapes is a so-called ‘wicked problem’ because ecological processes, social values, and economic forces interact in complex, dynamic and often contested ways. We work with partners on three complementary themes to advance knowledge and approaches that help make better, fairer decisions for forested landscapes and the people who depend on them: Edinburgh Forests and Landscapes Network Linking academics, researchers and postgraduate students with policy, business and third sector professionals with an interest in sustainable forests and landscapes. Edinburgh Environment and Development Network Bringing together academics and practitioners working on issues of environment and development from in and around Edinburgh.
