Collaborative research projects

CSFL frequently collaborates with partners from academia, policy, business, and third sector organisations on projects of varying scale and duration.
Below are some examples of our collaborative work.

Informing a conversion to coppice

This was a collaborative project between CSFL and Crìoch Woodland Services whose aim was to understand the environmental impacts of coppice with standards woodland management with findings that have a practical use by informing the management and monitoring approach of oak woodland sites in the west of Scotland on Montrose Estates.

Setting the agenda: Rooting future woodland restoration research in practitioner needs

A collaborative project with steering group members from the Woodland Trust, Future Woodlands Scotland, Trees for Life, and Borders Forest Trust.

The project included an initial stakeholder workshop, followed by a report titled Setting the agenda: Rooting future woodland restoration research in practitioner needs, and was rounded off by a full day event on 9 June 2026 (report and slides from the event).
